What to look for in a one-bag travel backpack
1. A size that fits carry-on limits
The bag has to fit the airline's carry-on limit when it's packed. For the major US airlines that's usually 22 x 14 x 9 in, including handles. Check your airline before you fly; our American Airlines carry-on size guide covers one of the most common limits. Bags that expand are useful, but check the size you'll actually fly with.
2. Capacity in the 30 to 40 liter range
Under 30 liters gets tight for anything longer than a weekend. Much over 40 and the bag usually won't fit a carry-on limit. An expandable bag lets you stay compact day to day and add space for the trip.
3. A clamshell opening
A top-loading backpack means digging from the top down. A clamshell opens flat like a suitcase, so you can see and reach everything, and repacking in a hotel room takes a minute. For one-bag travel, this is the single biggest difference.
4. Laptop access without unpacking
If you work while you travel, the laptop should live in its own compartment you can open without touching your clothes. That matters at security and on the plane.
5. A harness for a full load
